Discus Quarantine Basics for New Arrivals
A simple quarantine (QT) gives new discus time to settle and lets you watch appetite, breathing, color, and waste before fish join an established aquarium. Plan on at least 2 weeks; longer observation is sensible if a fish is stressed or symptoms appear.
Use a clean 10–30 gallon holding tank with a stable heater near 85°F, a lid, and a low-flow sponge or other gentle filter. Keep the bottom easy to observe and use a dedicated net and siphon. Match temperature and water quality, and make daily water changes as needed to keep ammonia and waste low.
When the box arrives, float the sealed bags for about 30 minutes to equalize temperature. Then open and gently transfer the fish; avoid pouring shipping water into the QT. Keep lights off for the first 24 hours and give the fish a quiet environment. The first meal can be a small portion of frozen brine shrimp once the fish are settled and swimming normally.
Observe every day and remove uneaten food promptly. Feed lightly at first, test water, and avoid rushing the move to the display tank. When quarantine is complete and the fish are eating consistently, acclimate them to the display.
